Behind the Business: The Mount Dora CPA Bringing Bookkeeping and Tax Strategy Under One Roof
July 21, 2026
For many small-business owners, bookkeeping and taxes operate in two separate worlds.Transactions are categorized throughout the year—sometimes by the owner, sometimes by a bookkeeper—and then handed to a tax professional months later. By the time problems are discovered, the year is already over and many opportunities to make better financial or tax decisions have passed.
Timothy LeGendre built his Mount Dora accounting practice to close that gap.
Through Timothy LeGendre CPA LLC, he provides business owners with proactive tax strategy and planning supported by the accurate, year-round bookkeeping needed to make that strategy possible.
“I provide proactive tax strategy and planning, along with proper bookkeeping to back it up,” LeGendre said.
Rather than treating bookkeeping as basic data entry and tax preparation as a once-a-year transaction, LeGendre brings the two together. By personally understanding a company’s financial records throughout the year, he can identify problems earlier, answer questions with greater context and help business owners make decisions before tax deadlines arrive.
Addressing a Problem He Kept Seeing
LeGendre started his practice after repeatedly seeing small businesses struggle with unreliable financial records and limited guidance.
Some business owners were managing their own books without realizing that accounts had been categorized incorrectly. Others had hired inexperienced bookkeepers who could record transactions but did not fully understand accounting. In many cases, the problems were not discovered until a tax return needed to be prepared.
He also encountered business owners who felt their tax professionals were simply processing returns rather than taking the time to understand the businesses behind the numbers.
According to LeGendre, those issues create more than an inconvenience. When the books are inaccurate, it becomes difficult to create a meaningful tax strategy, understand profitability or make informed decisions about the future of a company.
His practice was designed around a more involved model.
“I’ve built my own bookkeeping software to handle the accounting needs in-house and give me valuable insight into the financials,” he said. “That allows me to do proper tax strategy throughout the year and not just at tax time.”
Building the Technology Himself
LeGendre’s approach goes beyond offering bookkeeping and tax services under the same company name. He has developed proprietary technology to support nearly every stage of the client experience.
That includes a full bookkeeping suite, a digital tax organizer and his own electronic-signature software.
The goal is to maintain greater control over the process, reduce the number of disconnected platforms involved and keep client work within his practice rather than sending it to third-party or overseas providers.
“These developments have allowed me to better serve my clients and bring the full experience in-house,” LeGendre said. “I have the software and proprietary systems to offer people support they can’t get anywhere else.”
For small-business owners, that means the professional reviewing the books is also the person preparing the tax strategy and answering questions about the company’s financial situation.
It also allows LeGendre to see the complete picture rather than receiving a set of financial statements at the end of the year with little understanding of how they were created.
More Than Bookkeeping Software
LeGendre is particularly direct about one of the most common misconceptions in small-business accounting: purchasing bookkeeping software does not necessarily mean a company has usable books.
He has seen business owners pay for software and attempt to handle the accounting themselves, only to discover later that transactions were misclassified, accounts were not properly reconciled or important details were missing.
He has also seen businesses pay someone to manage the software without receiving financial records that were accurate enough to support meaningful planning.
His advice to business owners is blunt: do not assume that QuickBooks—or any other software—is a substitute for accounting knowledge.
“Business owners don’t know what they don’t know,” he said. “They can end up costing themselves thousands.”
The issue, he explained, is not simply whether transactions appear inside a program. The books must accurately reflect what is happening in the business and be organized in a way that supports tax preparation, planning and decision-making.
That is why his practice begins with proper accounting rather than expecting software alone to solve the problem.
A Local CPA for Local Businesses
LeGendre’s connection to Mount Dora stretches back nearly 36 years.
He has watched the area grow, welcomed new businesses and seen the local economy change. Through it all, he believes one need has remained constant: business owners want professional advisers who are accessible, invested and willing to understand their individual circumstances.
“I’ve watched a lot of change take place here in Mount Dora,” he said. “But one thing hasn’t changed—the need for a CPA who actually cares about the clients.”
Joining the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce has helped LeGendre reinforce that local connection and introduce his different approach to other businesses throughout the community.
“Being part of the Chamber has been amazing,” he said. “It has allowed me to showcase that I’m a local business and that I care about other local businesses.”
Building awareness has also been one of the largest challenges of growing the firm. Accounting is a crowded field, and the differences between providers are not always immediately visible from the outside.
For LeGendre, the challenge is helping business owners understand that his service is not limited to filing a return. His work is built around year-round involvement, reliable financial records and direct access to the CPA responsible for the account.
Finding Answers Others Could Not
One of the most rewarding parts of LeGendre’s work is helping business owners who have struggled to get clear answers elsewhere.
He frequently speaks with people facing complicated accounting or tax questions who have contacted multiple firms before reaching him.
“I’ve had people tell me they called up to 30 other professionals in the area and none of them could answer their questions,” he said.
Clients are often surprised by how easily he can relate to their businesses and understand the situation they are describing. That ability comes from working closely with financial records rather than viewing each question in isolation.
It also reflects the sense of responsibility LeGendre feels toward the businesses he serves.
When he first launched the practice, success meant attracting paying clients and establishing the company. Today, his definition has become much more closely connected to client outcomes.
“Success is living up to the motto that I’m not more important than the clients I serve,” he said. “When clients are doing well, I’m doing well. I almost take a sense of ownership in their futures.”
That mindset shapes the type of practice he is building: one where bookkeeping creates the foundation, tax strategy happens throughout the year and business owners know exactly who is responsible for their work.
Quietly Supporting the Community
LeGendre’s involvement in Mount Dora is not limited to working with local companies.
When asked about his community service, he initially joked that he once picked up trash along the road in high school. His more serious answer revealed a quieter form of involvement.
He spends time getting to know and helping people experiencing homelessness throughout the area—work he describes as largely “sight unseen.”
It is consistent with how he approaches his business: focusing less on receiving recognition and more on being useful to the person in front of him.
As Timothy LeGendre CPA LLC continues to grow, LeGendre plans to keep developing the technology, systems and personal relationships that allow him to provide a more complete accounting experience for business owners.
The numbers may be what bring clients through the door, but his larger goal is to help them understand what those numbers mean—and use that knowledge to build stronger businesses.
