Mount Dora to vote on open-container district Tuesday

The Mount Dora City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on an open-container entertainment district in the downtown area. The measure got tentative council approval in September, when the board voted 5-2 to move it to a final vote. 

The ordinance now would allow outdoor consumption of alcoholic beverages in the district seven days a week. The idea behind the entertainment district is that people would be allowed to carry a drink with them from one participating business to the next and in outside areas within the district’s boundaries.

Herrick named to executive team at Mount Dora Trust

The Mount Dora Community Trust, which plays a key role in improving life for area residents by awarding philanthropic grants, has named Sarah Herrick its grant and scholarship manager.

Herrick is being groomed to replace longtime executive Kevin Batliner, who is leaving at the end of the year.

During his nearly two decades with the Community Trust, Batliner played an integral role in the development of the Trust and of Mount Dora itself. Over the years, he has shepherded grants for the Arts Festival, improvements to Donnelly Park, pet shelters and academic grants for local students.
