For many nonprofit leaders, letting go of day-to-day tasks can feel uncomfortable, even when it’s necessary.
Whether your team is made up of staff, volunteers, or a mix of both, mastering the art of delegation is essential for reducing burnout, strengthening your organization, and focusing on the work that truly requires your leadership.
In this engaging and practical session, nonprofit consultant Cheryl Smith will guide Executive Directors through proven strategies for delegating with confidence. Participants will learn how to decide what to delegate, assign responsibilities to the right people, and set expectations in a way that builds trust and maintains quality. The result: a stronger team, more time for strategic priorities, and less stress for you.
Participants Will Learn How To:
Understand the personal and organizational benefits of healthy delegation
Identify which tasks to keep and which to hand off using a simple decision-making framework
Match responsibilities to staff or volunteers based on skills, capacity, and motivation
Provide clear instructions, timelines, and accountability without micromanaging
Use practical scripts to make delegation feel supportive rather than burdensome
Overcome guilt and the fear of losing control when handing off work
Build a culture where delegation is seen as an opportunity for growth, not a chore
