Norman Van Aken, 1921 Mount Dora 'part ways'
Chef Norman Van Aken will no longer head 1921 restaurant after two years of overseeing the Mount Dora eatery. Initially called 1921 by Norman Van Aken, the restaurant is now known as 1921 Mount Dora.
A joint statement from Van Aken and 1921 Mount Dora reads: “After a tremendous two-year run, chef Norman Van Aken and his partners at 1921 in Mount Dora have decided to part ways with much respect and admiration. For all involved, 1921 remains a very special project. The restaurant and chef Norman Van Aken both will continue to maintain their individual missions to celebrate community and the best of Florida’s seasonal and local ingredients.”
Jamaica native brings island flavor to downtown Mount Dora
MOUNT DORA — Joan Reidenbaugh believes her new restaurant, Jamaica Gardens, has just what it takes to break the curse of their downtown Mount Dora location, by bringing in some Jamaican flavor.
“I’ve been told the building is cursed because many restaurants come and go,” she said. “But that was before us. It’s was time to bring some Jamaican spice to this place.”
A chef by heart, Reidenbaugh grew up in Jamaica and pursued a career in restaurant management. After 20 years of managing, she decided to venture out and open her first restaurant in Longwood and now Mount Dora.
